Die Wal-Route (Route des Baleines) verbindet die Städte Tadoussac und Natashquan an der Côte-Nord und durchquert dabei die Regionen Manicouagan (310 km) und Duplessis (570 km). Die Wal-Route führt ebenfalls in die Gegend von Blanc-Sablon. Diese Gemeinde ist von Québec aus nur per Boot und auf dem Landweg von Labrador aus zu erreichen.
Die Wal-Route (Route des baleines) erstreckt sich über etwa 900 Kilometer entlang der Mündung und dem Golf des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms. Im Sommer lassen sich entlang der Ufer des Flusses etwa ein Dutzend Walarten, wie beispielsweise der Blauwal, entdecken. Beobachten kann man die Meeressäuger vom Land aus an mehreren Standorten, die zum Parc marin du Saguenay-St.Laurent gehören, oder natürlich während einer spannenden Bootsfahrt auf dem Strom!
Lassen Sie bei Ihrer Fahrt entlang der Wal-Route Ihren Blick schweifen und genießen Sie die schönen Ausblicke auf den Sankt-Lorenz-Strom, die naturbelassenen Wälder, die Buchten und feinen Sandstrände. An speziell eingerichteten Beobachtungspunkten wie Sainte-Anne-de-Portneuf können Sie anhalten und den Walen zusehen. Sie könnten sie aber auch zufällig bei einer Pause an einem Kai, einem Rastplatz neben der Straße oder von einem Campingplatz aus beobachten. Cap-de-Bon-Désir in Bergeronnes ist für die Beobachtung von Walen besonders gut geeignet.
Tadoussac, ein hübsches Dorf am Rande des spektakulären Saguenay-Fjords, ist das Tor zur Region Manicouagan. Wie das noch etwas weiter entfernt liegende Les Escoumins ist es auch eine der wichtigsten Ablegestellen für Bootsausflüge zur Beobachtung der Meeressäuger. In der teilweise erschlossenen, aber dennoch wilden Region Duplessis bahnen sich zahlreiche breite und gewaltige Flüsse ihren Weg durch nahezu endlose Nadelwälder. Nach einem Aufenthalt in Sept-Îles setzt man den Weg in Richtung Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan fort. Dort können Sie das Walforschungszentrum Minganie besuchen und sich auf Beobachtungstour der Meeressäuger begeben, die den Sankt-Lorenz-Golf bevölkern. Von Havre-Saint-Pierre brechen Sie zu einer Besichtigung der bizarren Felsformationen des Mingan-Archipels oder zu einem Besuch der Île d'Anticosti auf. Diese Insel ist für die raue Schönheit ihrer Meereslandschaften, ihrer Schluchten, Höhlen und für die riesigen Herden von Virginia-Hirschen bekannt. Sie wollen noch jenseits dieser Route weiterreisen? Ein Küstenschiff bringt Sie auch zu den versteckten Dörfern an der Grenze zu Labrador.
Viele Häfen der Küstengewässer und am Golf des Sankt-Lorenz-Stroms sowie am Nord- und Südufer bieten von Mai bis Oktober täglich Walbeobachtungstouren mit Schiffen jeder Größe an. Die bevorzugten Plätze für die Waltouren sind der Parc Marin du Saguenay-St. Laurent (mit zahlreichen Abfahrten von Tadoussac, Baie-Sainte-Catherine, Rivière-du-Loup und Trois-Pistoles), der National Park im Mingan-Archipel in der Region Duplessis und der Parc national Forillon in der Gaspésie. Québec ist für seine sachkundigen Führer auf diesen Touren bekannt. Sie liefern nicht nur Informationen über die Wale, sondern auch über deren Lebensraum und andere Themen des Ökotourismus.
An einigen Stellen ist der Fluss in Ufernähe so tief, dass man regelmäßig vom Ufer aus Wale beobachten kann. Das ist beispielsweise an der Mündung des Saguenay-Fjords, am Cap-de-Bon-Désir (Bergeronnes), an zwei Stellen im Parc Marin du Saguenay-St.Laurent und in Pointe des Monts (Duplessis) möglich.
